High Peaks from Weston Mountain

How to use Picasa to generate an ADK Photo Album.

Open Picasa and Choose a folder with the pictures of your hike. Here I am presuming that you know how to copy photos from your digital camera into the Picasa program. Picasa comes with great instructions on how to do this.

Here we are selecting a folder from a Halcott Mountain Hike.

2. Notice in the next picture that there is a line near the top of the thumbnail pictures, just below the date, called Add Description. Here you will type in the hike description for the outing. We usually enter, leaders, participants, and anything mentionable that happened along the way.

3. It is possible in Picasa to also enter a caption for each picture. To do this just double click on the thumbnail and you will come to a picture editing page. It allows you to rotate, correct color, and also at the bottom - to enter a description for each picture. When you are done click the button at the top that says Back to Library

4. Now this step is important. You need to select which photos will be in the album. First you might want to drag the pictures into the order you want them. Most of the time they are already in chronological order, but if you want to change this just “drag and drop”. To select the picture you want in the album just hold down the control key (CTRL on a PC keyboard) and click each picture you want to include. To deselect a picture just click it again.

5. Now that you have entered all the captions and titles, and selected your pictures you are ready to make a web photo album. The first step is to select Folder on the menu bar and then export as HTML page.

6. You are almost there. You should now see a dialog box with some settings. The default will usually work fine. Pay special attention to the resolution (640px) and to the title (by default the name of the folder but now is time to change it if need be).

7. Click Next when you are done and another dialog will open. In this one select the template that we use on ADKLI which is template 3 two page white background. This is a great template that allows for fairly large photos and little wasted space.

8. Click Finish! Believe it or not you are done and you new website will pop right up in a preview. It is located in your My Documents folder in a sub-folder named Picasa HTML Exports. In this example the folder name is Halcott Mountain Bushwhack. To have this album published on the ADKLI site burn the entire folder onto a CD or use ADKLI FTP to transfer the files. Any questions on using Picasa or if you are interested in FTP transfer contact Mike Vetrano at webmaster@adkli.org.  Mail your CD to Mike at 455 Hunter Avenue, West Islip NY 11795
