Young Members

Are you twenty or thirty something, like to hike, and want to meet other young people who share your love of the great outdoors? Then the Young Members Group of ADK Long Island is for you. Our Young Members Group was formed in the fall of 2003 by young members of ADK Long Island who wanted to recreate together in activities prepared and led by young members of our chapter.

 Some Highlights of our Hikes

hunter2007Hunter Mountain Snowshoe Hike February 2007

Long Island and Mid-Hudson YMG’s layered up and took a chilly ride up to the top of Hunter Mountain. Once we safely unloaded off the lift, we adjusted our layers and began to snowshoe up up and up to see some great views from the Water Tower. We hiked along a snow filled winter wonderland trail….and anyone who had a camera made sure they were prepared to aim, focus and click! One Kodak moment after another! At the Top, we ran into Caroline. She was a nice German girl who came up to the area with others, but was the only one in her group to snowshoe. Since she was alone and not very prepared….we befriended her and told her all about ADK. Her feet were cold and we offered her some hand warmers and told her she could hike back with us. Later she thanked me and told me that her one toe was so cold that she could not feel it……so, thanks to warmers….it saved her!! Click here for the full picture album.

coldspring2007Cold Spring Hike March 2007

We started hiking from Jericho Tpk so we could hike North and end in town for some after hiking Hot Chocolate. The trail was marked well….and Denis was kind enough to help along the way since this was the first time Bob and I were leading on this trail. Denis said ....if we can't lead our way on this clearly marked trail....we need to hand in our membership! Well, I am glad to say.... Littleman is still a member! There was some ice along the way….and a couple slippery spots but over all a great day out. It was chilly out but not cold enough to keep away a team of high school runners andr some other hikers that we spotted along the way. Click here for the full picture album

Young Members Charter

The following Charter is drawn from the first organizational meeting of our YMG held in June 2004:

  • janine - loriIt was agreed that the “Young Members Group” would be open to all members of the Chapter. However, the Group will be geared to those members in the eighteen to forty-five age brackets.
  • Outdoor activities will be the primary focus of the Group’s endeavors. Those in attendance at the meeting agreed that activities like hiking, biking (road and off-road), kayaking, rock climbing, picnicking, concerts and skiing would be among the Group’s initial organized events.
  • YMG hikes will be led by younger members.
  • We reach out to potential younger members through gyms, college student centers, and libraries. Also, the Group will target its marketing efforts toward occupational groups like schoolteachers.
